Summer Essentials For Keeping Your Dog Cool

Hello Dog Days Of Summer!

The dog days of summer have started, Hello Summer Solstice (June 21,st) . The summer months are hot as can be, it can be a miserable time for your pup. When you own a dog, it's vital that you look after, and take good care of it. How can you work against the hot days to make sure your pooch stays cool and avoids dehydration, heatstroke, and more? Here is a list of summer essentials to keep your canine companions safe and sound this summer.

Water

We start with the most obvious of summer essentials: your dog's drinking water. Whenever you are away from home doing outdoor activities or your dog doesn't have access to their water bowl, you have to have a backup plan. Numerous dog owners carry around a water bottle that has an attachment that doubles as a temporary water bowl.

Other dog owners may carry a standard water bottle, or a portable water bottle along with a collapsible water bowl. Pay attention to your dog's thirst to avoid overheating and keep your dog's hydration leveled.

Shade

If your dog spends time on the patio or outdoors a lot, make sure they have a shaded area they can escape to from the sun. If your patio isn't covered, consider investing in an outdoor canopy or tent for your dog's mat and voila! Your dog has more shade.

A Pool

You don't have to start a construction operation to get a pool for your pooch. You can pick up a kiddie pool from your local Walmart or Target and fill it with cool water and your pup will 100% be happy. Keeping a kiddie pool in your backyard gives your pup the option to take a refreshing dip on a hot day.

Frozen Goodies

Stock up your freezer with homemade frozen treats and goodies for your fur baby to enjoy. There are countless recipes online for both freezer and treats that only need refrigeration. You can also visit our blog on Frozen Treats https://valuedogtraining.com/oldblog/hot-weather-home-made-dog-treats

Booties or Paw Protection

The warmth of asphalt is rising to hot temperatures this summer that can do damage to your dog's paws. Steer clear of walking paths that are baking under the sun and keep your dog off the asphalt if they do not have booties or paw protection of some sort.

Sunscreen Pet Products

Sun protection is a top priority even with your pooch especially if your pup is a dog breed that has white hair and is short haired, making their skin more exposed to the Sun's UV Rays. There are dog safe sunscreen products on the market to protect your dog's skin. Avoid human sunscreen as it contains chemicals that are toxic for dogs.
