Retractable leashes are one of those things that dog trainers love to hate. This is partially due to the fact that retractable leashes are made with convenience, not training, in mind. But the real problem with retractable leashes in most dog trainer’s minds is that people just don’t seem to know how to use them correctly.

Sometimes this does require changing collars and teaching your dog what the End of the Leash is and to HEEL with a Loose Leash.

False Information - You can't use a retractable leash with a restraining or corrective collar because then you're giving them freedom - and then correcting them for having it. Remember that if you are using a corrective collar your dog is giving him or herself the correction 97% of the time. That is how a correction collar works not you, the dog owner, continuing to give the correction.

Not 100% true as it works the same thing with a 4 six or long line leash. If he reaches the end of the leash, and then you tense up and snap him back, you could injure his neck. This sends a message to your dog and might cause him to associate tension or pain with dogs in general, making him aggressive. It’s about teaching your dog how to HEEL / Loose Leash no matter how long the leash is. The leash can cause human accidents, such as getting wrapped around or burning your hands or legs. Yes it can however so can a 4ft, 6ft or long leash cause the same issues. It’s called the dog owner needs to be taught how to use the Retractable Leash, just like a Long Leash.

If you lose control of the handle, the dog gets frightened as this big plastic thing chases him down the street, and he can't get away from it. TRUE that is only if you let go of the handle.  It would be the same thing with other types of leashes or a long line, and if you attach the poop bag hold to the leash. I have seen the snap come off and hit owners, leaving bruises - and even one broken nose. I have seen dogs on these awful leashes run right into the street from a sidewalk. AGAIN OWNER problem owner no knowing how to hold and or use the leash. Dogs on retractable leashes are put at risk by owners going into a pet store and getting caught in the automatic doors, or tripping people, or getting attacked by animals in the waiting room at the veterinarian.
Retractable leashes are great in an open park, the beach, an empty lot or cul-de-sac and or places where dogs can sniff and smell and have a little away time to enjoy a romp.
