Hot Weather Tips for Your Dog

Hot Weather Tips

It’s summertime and the weather is hot…sometimes too hot for your dog! Dogs can have the same troubles that we do such as, dehydration, overheating, and even sunburn. you and your dog can have a great summer.

Summertime is a time for fun and frolicking but it’s also fraught with danger for our dogs.

When the temperature rises, we need to take extra caution to make sure our pets are okay in the heat. Here are some key tips to help keep your pet cool and safe.

Heat Kills!

You should not leave your dog in an unattended car for even a couple of minutes.

Be Cool!

Dogs can easily suffer from heat exhaustion, so be sure to walk them either early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the midday heat. Dogs’ bodies are closer to the ground than ours, so they heat up quicker.

Routinely refill their bowls

If your pets spend a lot of time outside, it’s especially important that you keep their bowls full of fresh water. Dogs go through a lot of water on hot days and may end up emptying their bowls quicker than you realize.

It’s best to purchase several large bowls that you’ll routinely fill with fresh water. Even if your dogs haven’t drunk any water in a while, it’s good to give them a fresh bowl, you can add ice as this keep the water cool and fresh longer.

Cool in the Shade

Providing your dog with shade in the backyard during the hot months is essential to maintaining your dog’s health and happiness. Give them several shaded spaces if they you need to be outside.

Trees provide an idea shade area, along with Covered Patios, Beech Umbrellas, Sun Sail, Roof Pens, Elevated Cot with Canopy. There are lots of DIY ideas to help you create a cute shaded area for your pooch.

Cool in the Pool

One totally safe way for dogs to keep cool are Water Troughs and or Kiddie Pools filled, enough water to cover them when they lie down so if they want or splash about.

Careful of the PAWS!

Walk early in the morning before it’s too hot. Try to walk your dog on grass and avoid hot asphalt. Walking on hot roads or sidewalks can cause your dog’s pads to get burned. Small sips only.  When you go out with your dog, take plenty of water with you, but do not allow your dog to drink it all at once. Smaller, more regularly spaced doses help avoid bloat and other dangerous or uncomfortable conditions.

Cool Pads!

A really great way to cool your dog during the summer is to provide a kid’s paddling pool. Dogs sweat through their pads, so a great way to cool down quickly is to get their feet wet.

Get Wet!

Swimming is a great way to quickly cool off your hot dog, but be sure not to tire him out too much. Even really good swimmers can tire to the point where it could get dangerous.

Floaties!

If you are out on a boat with your dog, be sure she is wearing a life preserver. Watch the sun.  Some light-colored dogs need to wear sunscreen around their most vulnerable areas. Consult your vet to see if this is something that applies to your dog.
